It was blistering out on the small concrete balcony.Victoria was sitting on a lawn chair that took out more then It fair share of the concrete. Her small ginger kitten, Nietzsche, named after nineteenth-century German philosopher, was laying in the shade of a small potted plant.
It just wasn't a hot day, It was record breaking. The blacktop floor of the concrete jungle bubbled, and the natives were getting restless. As she fanned herself with the day news paper, Victoria looked out over the city, above and below her look-out.Despite the heat, it so far had been an un-interesting day.She thought that perhaps she would make the small trip down to the newsstand to buy herself some bottled water.A nice cold drink would really hit the spot.Lifting herself up of the chair, picking up Nietzsche along the way and dropped the kitten safely in the living room.
Taking the elevator to the lobby of her building, she smiled to the doorman as she entered the blinding sun.Pulling her shades over her eyes, she started on her way, flip flops clapping some strange beat on the bubbling blacktop.

Kyle did not do heat. First, there was the black feathers. Then there was the down feathers. After that, there was the bright bright sunlight. His eyes were weak, even with his thick glasses. They did not do light, not very well. It hurt, and mixed with the heat the monster of a creature was fit to burst. Now he was lost.
Kyle had been in the X-shop when the Psy-blast hit him hard. The Psychic students were the ones that worked hard to coat the store, turning Beast and Nightcrawler into humans. They made Storm’s hair and eyes a dark brown, and turned him into a cat to human eyes. But one of them slipped, and his hidden human mind felt the shock through the bird’s brain. And it hurt. A lot. So he ran, trying to take flight with his huge wings that had never flown. It didn’t work, but he got out of the store and down the street in a rush. He was fast, they had to admit that. He was in the City now, lost and confused and hot. He didn’t like it, at all.
Crouching in an alley way, he cooed to himself trying to figure out what to do next. The bird wanted to hide, and it was in charge all the time. So hide he did between two large apartment buildings, whining to himself and staying in what little shadow there was.

Victoria paid the man and took and long swig of the water. She twisted the cap back on the bottle with a satisfied sigh. She knew that as soon as she got home, she would turn her bedroom into a meat locker with the blessed air conditioner.Hopefully, there would be ice on the window. She walked, bumping into people and passing parked taxis. This was what she loved about the city, it never seemed to stop, never seemed to sleep. There was all ways some kind of 24/7 ride of thrills and chills that New York could offer. She turned the corner and a funny sound caught her attention.
She looked down the alley and she could hear something cooing. When she looked down the dark hall way between the to buildings and it looked like a person was crouched down in the corner. She knew a person could get heat stroke on a day like this, but she all so knew better then to go near strangers in the city. She really didn't wanna end up on a side of a milk carton or worse.Instead, she took a few steps into the alley, bent down and rolled the water bottle down the alley. She waited until it looked like the bottle bumped into the person be for she stood up.she then called out into the dusk of the alley."Hey, are you OK?"

There was someone there. He didn’t know what, and didn’t really care either. But there was someone, and it was interesting. Kyle couldn’t see them, it was too bright and too painful to make them out, but they got small, then big again. Something hit him! Freaking slightly he tried backing up more, remembering his tiny cage in the basement for a split second. No, this was different; he could move here, there was light here, and no food. Rats were around, yes, but they didn’t chew on his feathers because he couldn’t reach around behind him. These ones avoided him.
So what hit him? He picked it up carefully in his mouth, the long teeth holding it delicately. It sloshed, which meant liquid. And it was cold, he could feel through his gums. Long tongue went to work and unscrewed the lid, pouring the water into his long snout and down his throat. Ah, that was good. Very good. It was hot, and this person was giving him water. Lifting himself a bit, he took a few steps forward with bottle still in his long mob.
“Hi Kyle! Brrrr, ooohhh-laaahhh.” Staying low, as though it would keep him out of the painful light, he got closer to the thing that was talking to him. The bird-brain was repeating like some large parrot that loved to say hello, even when you were leaving.

Victoria stopped when she heard the voice. She turned around, she sun dress swished against the old brick of the building. To her, it had sounded something like a bird voice, a parrot pantomiming a human. She was censused. How many homeless people had exotic birds for pets? Against her better judgment, she turned into the alley. She waited for her eyes to adjust to slight darkness. When they did, she was so shocked, she drew in a sharp breath and back up against the side of the alley.
In all her seventeen years alive, she had never seen a mutant in person.sure, she had seen what they had done on the news, in the papers. From the teachings of the media, mutants meant bad things. They meant she could get hurt or kill, but there was something different about this one. This time, it looked like he was in pain. She walked, pressed against the building and made her way down to him."hey...are you OK?" she asked. She could see him more clearly now.
A bird. That was what she thought of first. That explained the cooing and parrot-like voice. She bent down and took him in.He looked afraid. She wanted to help him, but she wasn't sure how.[/sub][/color]

“Okay! Okay! Skaawwt! Grroood Kyle.” She kept coming closer, which scared him. He didn’t know her, or here. He was in a strange place. Still low he came forward a bit more, head almost scraping the concrete as he looked up at her down his long nose. He spread his wings a little, puffing his feathers up a bit as he came close enough to touch her.
And he did. Just a little, with the tip of his snout. He dropped the now empty bottle at her feet, cooing slightly. He was scared of her, yes. But she gave him water. That had to account for something, right? (Gah, sorry.)

Victoria tried to stay as still as she could.Fighting her basic instinct to flee, she watched closely as he bent close to her.Victoria picked up the water battle as he dropped it at her feet. The skin of his snout felt hot to the touch and that bothered her.Maybe more then it should. It wasn't like she was his mother. She corrected herself in her head. That was the New Yorker in her.She could help me and more, she wanted too."Do you want some watter?"She asked him.She wasn't sure if he could understand her.
"Are you lost? were are you from?" She asked, twenty questions time.Strangely, she was fascinated.[/sub][/color]

He couldn’t understand her, not at all. Which was sad, really. He had been human once, a long time ago. Whatever was left of that person was gone, locked tightly away where no one could get it. But there were words that Scott had told him, something he remembered faintly. Lost. Yes, he knew that word. And water. Standing to his full six-something height, light flashed off his thick glasses and hid his dark eyes for a moment. Feathers down, he tried to think of what to do.
“Last, Skawwt! Ooooh-laaaa.”

Victoria looked up, actually daunted for the first time. She was short and that was a soft spot for her.She shook her head a little to clear it and think about how she could fix this. She was sandwiched between her building in the next with some weird bird thing. There was nothing she could do here. There was nothing here she could use.A Dumpster, an empty water bottle, the fire escape...the fire escape would take them all the way up to her balcony and her apartment.Where it was cold.
"Hey, you!" She said, turning to Kyle. She snapped her finger in front of his long snout to get his attention."Watch.Me" She said, putting emphasis on each word has if she was teaching him there meaning. She put her foot on the first rung of the ladder."Watch."She said, looking him in the eye.She moved up a few more inch on the ladder and then jumped down. She pointed to him and then to the ladder."Now, you try it."[/sub]

Kyle drew back as she snapped in his face, though really it was far from his face it was still his nose. Tossing his head up he squawked rather annoyed, snapping his jaws at her faintly. ‘Don’t do it again’ he was saying, not that he could really do so. Until the indignation was forgotten and she was moving onto something else. Then all was well in the Kyle world he lived in. He watched her, saw as she moved up the ladder then jumped down again.
If there was one thing he was good at, it was mimicry. He could do what she did, he wanted too. Copy copy copy copy… the mantra repeated itself in his head over and over again until he was in front of the steps, eyeing it carefully. One foot lifted itself, latching onto the bottom rung that was within easy reach for his backwards joints. Then he lifted the second to do the same.
And fell backwards onto his head. Screaming and calling and garbled “talking” was all that could be heard from the mass of flailing feathers, a few coming free and drifting to the ground. Someone kind of forgot that he had fingers.

Victoria rushed over to squawking mess of feather and knelt down and put a hand on his chest."hey...calm down."She had a figured out by now that he couldn't understand her, but she tried to make her voice sound as soothing at she could."That was a smart move, Victoria."she scolded herself."Stay.Here."She said, look down at him.She got up and then turned and ran out of the alley. She turned the corner and ran to the new stand. She paid, grabbed her water and started to shove her way back to her street through the crowd of people. She trained back into the alley and called out to him."I'm back!".She walked backed to him, and half twisted, half ripped off the cover. She hadn't noticed until she got back to slightly cool darkness and she had sweat quite a bit from her little run.She took a long swig of the water and then made a little cup out of her hand and splashed a little into her own face. She held out the water bottle for him to take. With her other hand she tried to smooth out a few of his ruffled feather and sighed. She was frustrated, something that she often wasn't.
"What am I gonna do with you?"[/color]

Kyle lay still as she advanced at him, his heart hammering as she touched him. What was she going to do? Basic instinct told him to bite, to flail and hurt and run away. But she hadn’t hurt him, and she was gone too fast to do anything. But he couldn’t stay on his back. The hawks could get him, the cat could get him, the dog could get him… no, he couldn’t stay on his back. But he couldn’t get up! He flopped his armwings and kicked with his foot. Forgetting that one foot was still attached to the ladder. Quite perplexing. Finally laying still again, he snapped at the air and heard something approach.
Oh! It was the same person. She was trying to give him something, and he remembered the water from before. The anteater tongue slowly took the plastic, careful eyes watched her movement as she pet him, unsure if this was okay or not. drawing his wings to him he let go of the ladder and pulled his claws to his chest, trying to get small. But he was quiet, letting some of the water drip into his mouth.

Victoria sat on he ground and waited for him to finish. She was still trying to smooth out for the ruffled or broken feathers."Your not very graceful, are you?" She mumbled. She was talking more for her sake then his.Right about now, she left like walking right out of the alley and just heading home. But she knew she couldn't, she would be able to live with herself. She stop peting him and stood up slowly, her knees were stiff and her ankle was swollen from that impromptu run in the flip-flops."Do you wanna try it again?"She asked him, looked down Kyle. She put one hand on the ladder and started to climbed and turned back when she was about five feet up of the ground."Follow me and don't fall off when were half way up because I'm not gonna be the one that has to scrap your mutant bird guts of the blacktop!"She said, and started to climb. She looked up and she could she the small plat form that lead to her apartment. She sighed, why couldn't she have a home on the ground floor? She keep climbing, and as much as she didn't want to, she looked back to see where Kyle was.She was at least fifteen feet of the ground now.[/sub][/color]

She rose, and he found himself wanting her hand back. It was nice, this thing she was doing, this petting. Storm would do it now and then, he’d sit under her chair during dinner and she’d pass him some scraps and scratch his head throughout the whole thing. It was nice indeed. He liked having his head scratched. This girl had done something different, but it was nice too. Flipping over, finding he could do it now, he watched again as she climbed again. How did she do that?!
Curious as to what this thing was, Kyle bit it. It tasted like metal, and felt like metal. That’s what gave him an idea. Reaching as far as he could, he bit the third rung up, then it was one foot, and the other. He was on the ladder! Gripping it tightly with his claws, he quickly threw his head up, grabbed another rung, and stepped up one at a time. it took a long time, but he managed to catch up after a bit. Boy was he proud of himself.

She could see the rail that worked its way around her balcony. They were almost there. She could hear Kyle below her, climbing my gripping the rungs of the long ladder with the strange 'gator snout. She stop for a moment to wipe the sweat from her forehead. She was usually lazy on a hot day like today, normally sleeping out the worst of the heat. Now she was leading a mutant up a ladder. How did she get her self into these things? we may never know.
They had made it.She put a hand on the banister and flung her leg over the edger and dropped in a heap on the other side. She lay there breathing for a second, and closed her eyes. The black concrete of the balcony was hot, but right now she didn't care. She opened her eyes when she felt a little, rough tongue lick her nose. She smiled and then stood up and picked up her kitten. She then looked her the side to see how far Kyle was."Are you okay?"She called down to him.[/sub][/color]

Kyle was having a blast! He was climbing up an unknown ladder to an unknown destination, making loud banging sounds every time he flung his head forward to catch the next rung! He loved loud banging sounds! Almost every bird loved to make loud sounds, and this was another way of being able to do it. Taking hold on the balcony this time, he looked up over his glasses to the girl that was looking over its side at him. Nice thing, gave him water.
Blinking, he had to now figure out how to get all the way up into the apartment place. That could be tricky. Considering as how he didn’t even know how he managed to get all the way up in the first place. Flapping less-than-useless wings, he scrabbled with his feet to get a grip that kept sliding. So he stopped, holding on by his teeth, watching the cat that was in her arms. Dinner?

Victoria looked down at Kyle as he made the loud bangs as he grappled his way up. She smiled at him as he hung on, looking at her. Well, not her, Nietzsche. She put the kitten down, pushing him lightly to wards the door and then turned back to Kyle. "Okay," she said, "Just swing your legs over the side and you're done!" she said, clapping her hand together. Strangely, she felt proud that that she and her new friend had made it this far. She hoped that nobody had seen them. Sure, it was New York, but how often did the Manhattanites get to see girl in a sun dress playing Spider Man with a giant bird ?
She turned on her heels toward the door to her apartment. Now that they had made it this far, how could she find out where he belonged? That was going to prove to be a challenge, Heck, she didn't even know his name! She sighed, slowing floating down from her high spirits. "follow me." She walked forward, her shoulders slumped.[/sub][/color]

Confused, Kyle scrambled again with his feet, finding a slight hold with one claw. Hey, that worked. With some awkward heaving and pulling he managed to flip himself over the rail, where he lay in a jumbled heap of feathers on his back. But her sudden change in demeanor did not go un-noticed. Some more work and he was on his feet, bobbing after her quickly until he was next to her. Resting his head on her shoulder he cooed a little before blinking at her through his thick glasses.
“Hi Kyle, brrr….” He had not much more to say.

She stopped and turned to face Kyle as she felt him rest his head on her shoulder. He cooed, and to her sounding a bit like the pigeons that would have been out on her balcony if not for the heat. She let a small smile crease at the corner of her lips and started to pet him. She thought it strange how one afternoon could change the course of her boring life into some strange and exciting adventure. If you had asked her not a few hours ago if she ever thought she would go sneaking up the side of a building, never mind the Kyle part, she would directed you to the nearest insane asylum. She walked forward, toward her small corner of a kitchen and reached for the old AC. It made an awfully loud hissing noise, but she soon felt the blessed cool.
"Well, we made it this far, hun Kyle?" she said, and reached into the small cooler and opened another bottle of water. Bending down, she picked up her cats water dish, emptied it and then refilled it and put it back down. She turned to Kyle and cupped the bottom of his snout in her palm. "You stay here." She quickly walked to her bedroom and closed the door behind her. She changed out of the sun dress into a pair of old, gray sweat pants and her black UCLA shirt. Stepping back out into the main part of her humble home, she found that the temperature inside had dropped. She plopped onto the couch and looked around for Kyle.[/sub][/color]

She pulled away, filling a bowl with water. As thirsty as he was he wasn’t going to drink out of a bowl… Robert had scolded him when he had tried to eat Iceman’s cereal… though; it was more because of the mess Kyle had made than the actual stealing of the food. It was a bird thing; you skimmed off the top because there could always be droppings on top of your food. That, and there could be something better just under the surface. Water was just something fun to splash in though. So he didn’t try the bowl. No matter how much he wanted to cool down. He’d have to find the fountain later; it had cool water in it.
His face was grabbed, but it was kind and she hadn’t hurt him yet. She walked away. Kyle didn’t understand humans, they moved a lot, and said a lot of words that didn’t make sense. But she was gone, and it left him to figure out where he was. She had turned on a funny looking box thing, and upon inspecting it found a vent that was blowing out cold [/i] air! Glory be! Cold! Sitting right in front of it he spread his wings knocking something over he didn’t care what there was cold air. Fluffing himself up he let skin show though his feathers to get as much air moving as he could. Air! Cold air! Not enough, she had done something to make it work, and after a bit of prodding with his long dry tongue found a control that made the air coming from it blow colder. Heavens above that felt good! So good he didn't notice Victoria coming out of her room again, didn’t notice that she was on the couch, didn’t notice Lunch (his name for the cat) was sniffing his big feet. He was cooling down, and that’s all that mattered to his one-track brain.[/blockquote]
